An unlikely expat blogger behind GentleHarborLight

Hey, I'm Sophie
I’m a project manager, a parent, and an expat based in Zürich, Switzerland.
Several years ago I moved here with my family. What began as a short-term assignment gradually became a new chapter of life abroad.
How It Started
Relocating to Switzerland hadn't been in the cards for the long haul. As with many international assignments, it started as a job opening and soon grew into something far more substantial.
The first months were intense — new systems, new routines, new expectations. Everyday tasks felt more complicated than they should.
The Adjustment Period
There was cultural adjustment, doubt, and plenty of hands-on learning. Gradually, habits took shape. We found places that suited us, connected with other families, and began creating something that felt secure.
Why I Built GentleHarborLight
Most online guidance was either corporate relocation tips or shallow travel content. What was lacking was an authentic, everyday family viewpoint.
This site aims to bridge that gap — practical advice grounded in real life in Switzerland.
What This Site Represents (And Isn't)
This site is:
- Practical insights from living in Switzerland
- Centered on family life and everyday realities
- Updated when something truly changes
This site isn't:
- Not a tourism authority resource
- Not a sponsored review platform
- Not a generic travel blog
Looking Forward
Our time in Switzerland continues, and so does the learning process. As long as the information remains useful, I’ll continue documenting what we discover.
If you have questions about family life in Zürich or anywhere in Switzerland, feel free to get in touch.
Cheers,
Sophie
